SUN KING
Located in Sun Valley, a Los Angeles neighborhood in the San Fernando Valley, Sun King creates 26 units for formerly homeless individuals and families. Through the reading of architectural figures and voids, the vertical surfaces of each of the six courtyards become sites for landscape emphasizing an east west direction and the programming of these spaces are developed with specific activities. Hanging vines of various colors create a tapestry that celebrates the local culture. The entry stairs become a place for the community and residents to meet with stepped seating and planters. The two podium courtyards serve as a children's play ground, the mid level courtyards are teenager gathering spaces with ping pong and stepped seating, and the roof top deck is a community room with the perimeter edge is planted as a community garden.
